Winter vs Summer Oʻahu
Side-by-side comparison of Oʻahu winter (Nov–Apr) and summer (May–Oct) across 24 dimensions — weather, wildlife, hazards, activities, and crowds.
Last updated:
| Dimension | Winter (Nov–Apr) | Summer (May–Oct) |
|---|---|---|
| Average daytime high (°F) | 76-80°F (Nov-Apr; NOAA Honolulu normals) | 82-88°F (May-Oct; NOAA Honolulu normals) |
| Average overnight low (°F) | 65-70°F | 72-76°F |
| Rain (Honolulu / leeward south) | 3.0-3.5 in/month avg; Pali Hwy closures during heavy events | 0.5-1.0 in/month avg; brief afternoon showers |
| Rain (windward / Kāneʻohe) | 6-10 in/month; cloudbank persistent | 2-3 in/month; trade-wind drizzle |
| Trade wind frequency | 55-65% (more Kona-wind variation, Nov-Mar) | 80-90% (steady NE trades May-Sep) |
| Humpback whales (kohola) | Jan-Mar peak; broad season Dec-May (NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale NMS) | Absent — whales return to Alaska to feed |
| Hawaiian monk seals (ʻīlioholoikauaua) | Present year-round; less pupping activity | Pupping season Apr-Aug peak; closed-off beach sections common |
| Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) nesting | Adult feeding; minimal nesting | Peak nesting May-Aug; protected nests roped off on North Shore + windward beaches |
| North Shore surf size | 20-40 ft on big-swell days (Dec-Feb peak); Triple Crown / Eddie | 1-5 ft typical; safe for snorkeling at Sharks Cove + Three Tables |
| South Shore surf size | 1-3 ft typical; calm for Waikīkī beginners | 2-6 ft (south swells, May-Sep); Ala Moana + Diamond Head break peaks |
| Box jellyfish (south shore) | Same 8-10 day post-full-moon pattern; less visible (fewer swimmers) | Same lunar pattern; more advisories issued (more swimmer encounters); see /data/oahu-box-jellyfish-calendar-2026 |
| Hurricane fringe risk | Minimal (Dec-May) | Jun-Nov fringe season; peak Aug-Sep (NOAA Pacific Hurricane Center) |
| Vog (volcanic smog) | Kona-wind days bring Big Island vog north (Nov-Mar) | Trade winds push vog south of Hawaiʻi Island; Oʻahu mostly clear |
| Whale-watching | Peak season; tours daily Dec-Apr; Makapuʻu / Lanaʻi Lookout shore-watching | Closed — wait until December |
| Snorkeling (south shore: Hanauma, Waikīkī) | Year-round; calmer water for novices | Year-round; south-shore swell windows can add chop |
| Snorkeling (North Shore: Sharks Cove, Three Tables) | DANGEROUS Nov-Mar — closed due to swell; do not enter | Excellent May-Sep; flat calm; some of the best reef on island |
| Surf-watching (spectator-only) | World-class — Pipeline, Sunset, Waimea Bay; biggest swells Dec-Feb | Modest; south-shore breaks accessible |
| Hiking | Slippery clay trails Nov-Mar (Manoa Falls, Maunawili); waterfalls full | Drier trails; heat exposure on Koko Head + leeward hikes; start before 7 a.m. |
| Reef restoration workdays | Easier to book (off-season); Oct-May 1-2 weeks lead time | Fills 4-6 weeks ahead; book early |
| Loʻi kalo workdays | Year-round; harvest days cluster Oct-Mar | Year-round; lower harvest tempo |
| Visitor volume | High in Dec-Jan (holidays + whale season); shoulder Feb-Apr | Peak Jun-Aug (school out + summer travel); shoulder May, Sep-Oct |
| Hotel rates (Waikīkī average) | $$$$ Dec 20-Jan 5; $$$ rest of season | $$$$ Jun-Aug; $$ May, Sep-Oct (shoulder) |
| Parking at popular trailheads + beaches | Easier midweek; difficult on big-surf weekends (North Shore) | Difficult by 8 a.m. most days; reserved-entry (Hanauma, Diamond Head) helps |
Key insights
- Winter = whale season + big surf. Humpback whales arrive Dec–May (peak Jan–Mar), and North Shore winter surf hits 20–40 ft on big-swell days. Spectator-only on the big-surf beaches; never enter the water Nov–Mar at Sharks Cove, Three Tables, or Waimea.
- Summer = sea turtle nesting + south-shore swell. Honu (green sea turtle) nesting peaks May–Aug; protected nests are roped off on North Shore + windward beaches. South-shore breaks (Ala Moana, Diamond Head) come alive on summer south swells.
- Box jellyfish hit south-shore beaches year-round, 8–10 days after each full moon. See the 2026 calendar for specific arrival windows. Pattern is the same in winter and summer; the advisory volume just goes up in summer because more people are in the water.
- Trade winds drop in winter. Summer is 80–90% trade-wind days; winter drops to 55–65% with more Kona-wind (south + west) variation that can bring vog from Hawaiʻi Island and shift rain patterns.
- Best time depends on what you want. Whale watching + lower hotel rates outside Dec 20–Jan 5 = winter. North Shore snorkeling + summer south-shore swell + reliable weather = summer. October is the most reliable shoulder month for both weather and pricing.
